Google Can’t Use Alphabet.com Because BMW Owns the Domain

Sometimes things don’t work out exactly as you’d expect them to, even though you’re a big time software company. Google is probably the best example in this regard as their recent business-model change seemingly wasn’t very well thought over.
You probably already heard that the software giant is undergoing a serious change as we speak, splitting its assets into two big companies. What we’re using on a daily basis, such as Gmail, the search engine and Youtube, for example, will now be functioning under a new name: Alphabet.

The name was chosen apparently at random because otherwise, we can’t understand how they could’ve overlooked the fact that the alphabet.com domain is owned by BMW. That’s right, Google should’ve googled that name before making this decision, apparently.

At the moment, Alphabet has the abc.xyz website online and working as its domain name but according to various analysts, if your company doesn’t have a .com website, it looks weak and vulnerable. Yes, it’s a bigger deal than it looks like.

Will BMW sell?

An easy solution to this conundrum would be to simply buy the domain from BMW but according to Mashable.com, the Germans aren’t willing to let go just yet. A spokesperson from Munich told the Times that the company isn’t planning on selling its domain anytime soon and there’s simply nothing Alphabet can do about it.

There’s also a lawsuit that the Germans could hit the American company with in the future, involving copyright infringement, but that’s not likely to happen.

At the moment, BMW is using the website for a fleet services company that provides companies with cars, operates in 18 countries and supplies over 530,000 vehicles to corporate customers.

As we said, a lawsuit is less likely as Google announced that the newly founded Alphabet Inc. doesn’t intend to build products and/or brands under that name anytime soon.
