Leaving aside the flood of bugs and the reliability issues that users occasionally encounter, Google does an incredible job in shipping Android Auto updates in a timely manner.
The beta program, which was expanded last year and opened the door to more users, works like a charm, giving more people the opportunity of test-driving new releases before they reach the broad availability stage.

Google has just shipped a new Android Auto beta build, and users can download it right now even if they're not part of the testing program.

Android Auto 10.9 comes with mysterious changes, as Google doesn’t typically share a changelog unless it included something really big in the update. The current release notes date back to Android Auto 8, as the company hasn't updated the information in over a year. However, new Android Auto updates are still intriguing, especially because they include refinements and fixes for some of the widespread bugs happening in the Android Auto world.

It makes no sense to try to guess what's new in this update, but worth knowing is that Android Auto 10.9 beta doesn’t seem to include any major feature. The update is likely focused on polishing the Android Auto experience, but you should still install it on your device. Make sure you drop us a line in the comment box below if you spot something notable after the update.

The pre-release build is aimed at users in the beta program, but you can still give it a try if you're not enrolled in the testing effort. To do this, you must download the Android Auto 10.9 beta APK build on your device, and manually install it on your smartphone.

The process requires special permissions, as installing apps from non-Google Play Store sources isn't allowed by default on Android. Once you begin the manual update, the process will prompt you for the required permissions on your device.

Meanwhile, new Android Auto features are already on their way, as evidence spotted in the previous builds suggest the parent company is working on significant improvements. For example, Google wants Android Auto to allow users to set custom backgrounds in addition to the pre-loaded backgrounds already available in the app.

Google will let users use the same wallpaper as on their mobile devices, creating more consistency when switching from the smartphone to the head unit in the car. The feature is still in its early days, so it's impossible to tell when the search giant could begin the public rollout to production devices. More evidence could be included in Android Auto 10.9, but we should be able to decrypt more information once this build exist the beta stage and makes its way to devices in the stable ring.
