Europe always gets the best stuff from Volkswagen, we've already established that, but when it comes to concepts, they don't have to make quite the same compromises. The makers of Jettas and Beetles announced today that the highlights of their stand at the upcoming Los Angeles Auto Show will be a couple of the most awesome cars ever to wear a Golf badge.
The first is the Golf R 400 Concept, or as fans call it, the R400. It was unveiled at a Chinese venue back in April and is basically a Golf R on steroids, supposedly pushing 400 horsepower from a 2-liter turbo engine and capable of zero to 62 mph (100 km/h) in 3.9 seconds and an electronically limited top speed of 173 mph.
They can hype it all they want, but the fact of the matter is this concept is coming to America before dealerships can sell regular Golf Rs, which is a rather sad. Another thing that's funny is that the name of the car is derived from its output, which according to US ratings is actually 395 hp. Still, nobody calls the Aventador an "LP690.5-4".
The Golf GTI Roadster is even more crazy. It's one of those Vision Gran Turismo concepts, where designers are allowed to do whatever they want. So they basically made the GTI everybody dreams of, basically a supercar killer.
It's powered by a 3.0-liter twin-turbo V6 pushing 503 horsepower and will do 0 to 60 in 3.5 seconds. The top speed is a very supercar-like 192 mph… if you can go that fast without a windshield and roof.
This one was unveiled at the Worthersee meeting in Austria and… well just look at it and tell us it's not the coolest car Volkswagen never made.
