GM Working on Two New Small Cars

The automotive industry has turned to downsizing in order to tackle issues such as fuel consumption and the global downturn. One of the consequences of this is the fact that the small vehicle segment is getting more and more crowded.

One of the automotive producers that are making efforts to develop vehicles belonging to this segment is General Motors, which is planning to offer two new small cars in the future, as autocar reports. The vehicles, which will come to the world by the middle of the decade, will join the Opel/Vauxhall range.

The first project is a premium hatch that uses the “fun and fashion” internal designation and is set to become a rival for the MINI. The second vehicle we are talking about is a low-cost city car that will use a new platform.

In order to cut costs, GM is using Korea for the design and engineering of the upcoming premium hatch. GM DAT (GM Daewoo Auto and Technology Company, the third largest South-Korean carmaker) is handling the design and engineering for the future small premium vehicle, as well as for the next generation of the Corsa. GM DAT will also develop the new platform that will be used by the upcoming city car. We have to mention that both small vehicle projects are still in the early development phase.

However, the premium small vehicle is expected to be built in Europe. As for the next generation of the Corsa, the company hasn’t decided its production base yet, so this could be made in Korea.
