GM Thai Strike, $6 Million a Day

General Motors earlier this week halted production in Thailand after workers at the local plant went on strike on Monday. A report issued today revealed that the strike at GM Thailand is costing the US-based car manufacturer no less than $6 million a day, as the factory is normally building 160 pickup trucks each day.

According to just-auto.com, negotiations are still under way but the two sides failed to reach an agreement. Union demands include incentive-based payments, support for union activities and for GM to pay for the damages caused by the strike.

"The negotiations between the union and the management have not shown any progress so far and we cannot foresee the end of it right now," union leader Voravudh Potisoonthorn told the Bangkok Post, according to the aforementioned source.

This is not the first time when General Motors has to cope with a workers' strike as a similar case was reported last month in Brazil. After a first round of failed negotiations, the 10,500 employees working at GM’s Sao Caetano do Sul plant and the 8,500 people from the San Jose dos Campos facility stopped work in mid-September. At the time, GM revealed it could only offer a a wage increase of 6.53 percent and a 1,750 reais ($972) bonus.

Workers from the the Sao Caetano plant asked for a 10 percent raise and a 2,000 reais bonus while those at the other production facility were demanding a wage increase of 14.65 percent.

Negotiations at the Thai factory are expected to resume soon, with the 700 workers at the factory likely to restart production next week.
