General Motors wants to further increase its operations in India with the help of Chinese carmaker SAIC. It seems like the US-based manufacturer is currently talking with the Chinese company over a potential alliance whose primary objective would be the expansion into new markets, including India.
A Reuters report citing India's Economic Times informs claims the negotiations are currently under way but a source familiar with the matter hasn't provided more details on the projects the two companies are working on.
"GM's discussions with SAIC include business opportunities in India, but no final decision has been made on how they will cooperate," the source said.
GM India recently signed an agreement with Reva to develop car platforms and electric vehicle technologies for the local market. It is believed the two companies will work together on an electric version of the Spark. Production of jointly-developed models will begin in 2010, GM said in a release.
"We are pleased to be joining hands with Reva, a leader in the development of electric drivetrains and control systems," said GM India President and Managing Director Karl Slym. "We will also work closely with the government of India, which has expressed a goal of reducing fossil fuel dependence, in the development of an electric vehicle infrastructure. We look forward to giving our customers a new choice of environmentally friendly products."
"We are extremely happy that we have found a partner in GM India that shares our passion for reducing carbon emissions. Reva and GM India will leverage our companies' strengths to help make India a global hub for the development and manufacture of electric vehicles and related technologies. Our unique collaboration has the potential to result in far-reaching changes for the industry," Chetan Maini, Deputy Chairman and Chief Technology Officer of Reva, said.
