GM Recalls 2004-2009 Chevrolet Colorado

General Motors is recalling several models in the United States after discovering that a brake lamp switch might work incorrectly and have serious consequences over both the affected car and the other motorists on the road. According to a notification posted on the official website of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) the glitch affects 2004-2009 Chevrolet Colorado, 2004-2009 GMC Canyon, 2006 Isuzu I-280, 2007-2008 Isuzu I-290, 2006 Isuzu I-350 and 2007-2008 Isuzu I-370.

"GM is recalling 185,903 model year 2004-2009 Chevrolet Colorado, 2004-2009 GMC Canyon, 2006 Isuzu I-280, 2007-2008 Isuzu I-290, 2006 Isuzu I-350 and 2007-2008 Isuzu I-370, passenger vehicles originally sold in or currently registered in the states of Alabama, Arizona, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Louisiana, Mississippi, Nevada, New Mexico, Puerto Rico, South Carolina, Texas, U.S. Virgin Islands and Utah," it is mentioned in the NHTSA advisory.

Specifically, "some of these vehicles have a brake lamp switch that may not work as designed due to contamination in the switch."

Fortunately, this can only lead to low risks but, in certain conditions, it can have serious consequences on both the affected car or the other vehicles on the road. The first thing that could happen is to lose all brake lamps or keep all brake lights permanently turned on. "Both of these conditions could fail to warn others of the driver's intentions and could lead to a vehicle crash," NHTSA explains.

What's interesting is that recalls are expected to commence only in February 2010 when the parts that need to be replaced will become available. However, owners who are affected by the glitch could get a free repair at one of the authorized dealerships of the company.
