General Motors is considering adding an off-road version to its new, redesigned large SUV lineup that was revealed earlier this month, GM trucks executive chief engineer Jeff Luke announced today.
Speaking during a media preview for the new SUVs, Luke said the Detroit-based company is “looking at a more off-road variant” for this new generation of trucks, mainly because owners “just love off-roading with these vehicles”, which are more capable than current unibody crossover.
GM has already offered the Z71 off-road package for the Chevrolet Tahoe, Chevrolet Suburban, GMC Yukon and GMC Yukon XL, but Luke added the option was never a strong seller, which means the strategy may be a bit different. Unfortunately, GM has declined further details, so we’ll just have to wait for more info to surface.
However, Luke unveiled that GM’s next-generation of SUVs will gain more enhancements and possibly an eight-speed transmission: “"In the life cycle of this product we're going to continually upgrade and add technologies, including in the powertrain area.”
