GM Loses its No. 2 PR Executive

In order to better cope with the financial downturn, it seems that General Motors needs some fresh blood at least in the public relations area.

It's not that we are commenting upon the (non) performances of GM's PR executives but seeing that the Detroit automaker is on the verge of bankruptcy, Tony Cervone, a top spokesman of the company is giving up his current position, Autonews reported. The man has already found a new warm shelter within UAL Corp., parent of United Airlines where he will occupy the position of communications officer and senior vice president.

As a matter of fact, Cervone has a contradictory professional past. Back in 1999, he left DaimlerChrysler AG for GM but the switch was only for one year as in August 2000, he returned to DaimlerChrysler. Yet, he hasn't stayed there for too long as in less than  half a year, he entered the gates of GM again. Such an undecided person...

But it seems GM truly believed in his competences as they promoted him to the vice president of global strategy and integration, being practically the second most important person in GM's global public relations department. As if this wasn't flattering enough for him,  everyone expected he would replace PR chief Steve Harris when Harris retired. But now, his chances regarding such a promotion are completely ruined.

More importantly, his decision seems to have surprised the struggling Detroit automaker, as it has no immediate announcement on the person that's going to replace Cervone, spokesman Tom Wilkinson reported.

Now we wonder what will happen in case the prodigal son changes his mind and wants to come back? Hopefully for GM, it won't take him back with a welcoming party...
