Things just went from worse to worser for General Motors: the Detroit giant recently informed the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) that no less than 2.2 million ignition lock cylinders from older model cars in the United States need to be replaced, therefore initiating a new recall operation.
Seriously GM, did it really have to take twelve dead, one injured and several hundred complaints addressing the issue of keys coming out of ignitions in order for you to get a move on and start mending the affected cars?
Speaking of which, some pretty popular models from General Motors' stable are affected by this glitch, as follows:
- 2003-2007 Chevrolet Cobalt
- 2006-2011 Chevrolet HHR
- 2006-2010 Pontiac Solstice
- 2007-2010 Pontiac G5
- 2007-2010 Saturn Sky
- 2003-2007 Saturn Ion
This latest bit of bad news from GM had a negative influence on the company's share value, that fell under 1 per cent the other day, closing at $33.30. CEO Mary Barra has a lot of explaining to do in order to temper the fury of many unhappy stakeholders.
The "funniest" thing General Motors declared in the press release announcing the 2.2 million vehicles recalled for ignition lock cylinder failure was the ending paragraph, that reads: "despite the $1.3 billion recall charge, GM currently expects to report solid core operating performance in the first quarter financial results." Nice sense of humor you got there, GM...
