As part of the new production plan, GM uses excess capacity from the new CAMI body shop to transport additional Equinox bodies from Ingersoll to Oshawa for the painting and final assembly stages. The Oshawa site also produces the Chevrolet Impala.
Relocating a part of the Equinox production to Oshawa allows the CAMI plant to increase GMC Terrain volume. CAMI continues to work on three shifts with scheduled overtime.
The move represents the third production volume increase for the Equinox and the Terrain, adding capacity to build 60,000 to 80,000 more cars for the Canadian and U.S. markets.
GM has decided to take this measure as the demand for the two vehicles is on an ascending trend and the company must make sure that it meets it.
“The incredible efforts of the teams at CAMI and Oshawa will better enable us to meet soaring customer demand for the Chevrolet Equinox and GMC Terrain,” said Kevin Williams, president and managing director of GM of Canada.
“Customer demand has made the Equinox and Terrain two of the hottest-selling compact crossovers on the market. In the U.S., the average "days to turn" is just 11 days for Equinox, and 12 days for Terrain. This compares to an average of 29 days for all compact SUVs, and 49 days for the industry average,” stated the press release.
