GM Daewoo Starts New Spark Shipments

GM's Daewoo Auto and Technology a few days ago started new Matiz and Spark shipments, with first units to be delivered to Europe. The fourth-generation Matiz will be globally known as Spark, with the parent manufacturer planning to export approximately 20,000 units in the Old Continent by the end of the year. Sales will officially begin in the first months of 2010, wrote.

As for the United States, General Motors intends to launch a Chinese-made Spark in the United States as soon as 2011. Chevrolet Spark and the next-generation Aveo will be the first models to arrive in the United States. Additionally, a new small car called Lova will be also launched in the US by 2011. All models will be produced by GM's Chinese partners, Shanghai Auto Industry Corporation (SAIC) and Liuzhou Wuling Auto.

The new Spark will be offered with a choice of two engines, a 1.0 and a 1.2-liter, both of them powered by gasoline.

Additionally, General Motors might also develop an electric version of the car, with the project to be developed with Indian firm Reva Electric Car Company.

"We have been pursuing opportunities for commercial application of alternative fuel options, including bio-diesel, jatropha arrangement with CSMCRI (Central Salt and Marine Chemicals Research Institute), electric, fuel cell, hydrogen etc, with many parties for quite some time," said GM India’s vice-president of corporate affairs, P Balendran. "Our efforts are ongoing and we have nothing to announce as of now. As soon as we finalise our plans for introduction of any alternative fuel solutions, we will announce the same," he added.
