At the beginning of November, the peeps over at Hyundai announced that they would launch a luxury sub-brand in December. And, hey presto, this is the first product of that sub-brand - the Genesis G90 luxury sedan in all its uncamouflaged glory. Looks pretty neat, doesn't it?
Edging deep into the luxury market has been on Hyundai’s agenda for a long time now, but the South Korean brand doesn’t intend to sit there and daydream about the future. With the arrival of the Genesis G90, the much-disputed full-size luxury sedan segment just got a bit more crowded.
Don’t think for a moment that the Genesis G90 aims to steal customers from the Mercedes-Benz S-Class, BMW 7 Series or Audi A8 because it simply won’t be able to.
At its core, the Genesis sub-brand was created to offer a full-size luxury sedan for less money than the usual suspects in this segment. Snapped by a gentleman named Sr_Blublu and published by automotive tipster Ferd, the photographs in the adjacent gallery reveal the exterior design of the Genesis 90.
It’s not surprising that the real thing mirrors the design sketches presented by Hyundai two weeks ago and we’re happy about that because the styling is bewitching. It may not have the same opulent character as the S-Class or the sporty stance of the 7 Series, but still, there's nothing wrong with the design of the G90.
The styling language applied to the G90 is dubbed “Athletic Elegance” and it acts as the blueprint that distinguishes the new Genesis brand from Hyundai. Slated to be launched in South Korea on December 9 as the Genesis EQ900, the US-spec G90 is slated to arrive on American soil before the second half of 2016.
There’s a possibility that the HTRAC AWD system will be offered as standard, but we’re pretty certain that shifting duties will be taken care of by an 8-speed automatic transmission. The reskinned and rebranded Hyundai Genesis will be available in three flavors as far as engine options are concerned.
A 3.8-liter V6 GDi with 334 PS acts as the entry-level proposition. Level up to the 3.3-liter V6 Turbo GDi and the output now sits at 370 PS. Last but not least, you’re looking at 425 PS for the range-topping 5-liter V8.
