Gascoyne Urges F1 to Get Rid of Boring Races

Team Lotus chief technical officer Mike Gascoyne suggested that some of the boring races of Formula 1 – in recent years, at least – should be the ones to be considered for an F1 exit, rather than the circuits that provide the audience and spectators with real, thrilling racing year in and out.

Recently, the International Automobile Federation (FIA) has worked closely with the Formula One Teams Association (FOTA) in order to improve overtaking in the series. Despite a great campaign in 2011, when no less than 5 drivers were battling for the world title with a few races to go, new rules have been introduced to make the sport even more spectacular.

After a whole new aerodynamic package in 2009, the upcoming campaign brings in a more evolved version of the Kinetic Energy Recovery System (KERS) and adjustable rear wings, all meant to make it easier for a trailing car to get past in an easier manner. According to Gascoyne however, the solution is much simpler than that and has nothing to do with aerodynamics or technical stuff.

We had three or four incredibly boring races'. If on certain circuits you have cracking races every year, then why don't we stop going to boring racing circuits?” said Gascoyne, according to crash.net, citing the Reuters news agency.

The shame is that, Monaco apart, a lot of the races now that are really boring are all the purpose-designed tracks built in deserts where you could have done absolutely anything that you want.”

Bahrain and Abu Dhabi were the two most boring races [of 2010]. It's pretty disappointing that you've got two massively boring races on circuits where you had literally carte blanche to do anything you liked. You could have had elevation change or moved sand wherever you wanted it,” he concluded.
