Following the new sales recipe on a worldwide scale, Yamaha has managed to increase its market share and is now offering a free restrictor kit with the purchase of a new MT-07 machine.
The MT-07 available in European markets was denied to young riders looking forward to get their hands on the new naked machine. EU regulations introduced about one year ago state that riders aged 19-20 can only get an A2 motorcycle permit. A2-compliant motorcycles have a 35 kW (46.9 hp, and in some places apparently 48 horsepower) engine power limit, and must not exceed the power-to-weight ratio limit of 0.27hp per kg.

This makes installing a power restrictor kit mandatory, but even so, a bike qualifies as an A2 machine only if it is “derived” from a bike which has less than twice the “A2 legal” power… so you technically can’t ride an A2 Hayabusa.

Understanding that the MT-07 could sell much better if young motorcyclists are allowed to ride the restricted version, Yamaha is now offering the restrictor kit for free, with the purchase of a new motorcycle. When installed separately on second-hand machines, the kit is valued at £124.99 (€149 or $207), so providing it for free is a truly nice incentive.

Yamaha dealers also provide a certificate which states the machine is now A-2 compliant, and will easily remove it upon rider’s request after getting a full A, and allow the customer to enjoy the full, 75 hp power. And given the fact that the Yamaha MT-07 sells for £5,199 (€6,200 or $8,630) with some £400 (€477 or $665) extra for ABS, we guess we’ll see lots of such bikes on the European roads soon.
