With the past A8 models, the facelifts were quite modest in nature, but this time they've really broken new ground and changed at least one piece of technology premium car drivers hold close to their hearts, and that's intelligent headlight technology.
The A8, A8L and S8 all benefit from a new all-LED headlight system called the Matrix. Instead of using motors to move the projectors, this system just dims some of the beams, leaving the others on full. It sounds simple, but Audi's technology usually hides its complexity well.

The A8 model shown in Frankfurt is the A8 4.2 TDI quattro. This powerful diesel V8 engine has been tuned from to make 385 PS and 850 Nm (626 lb-ft) of torque, 35 PS and 50 Nm more torque.

The 2014 A8 L model on show in Frankfurt also boasts an upgraded engine. It's the latest 4.0 TFSI model, now rated at 435 PS, 10 more than before.

All engines are mated to an 8-speed Tiptronic automatic gearbox and are Euro 6 compliant. Sales in Germany for the updated A8 range start this November with prices from €74,500.
