The teams' representatives have announced that the point system for 2009 will be revised in order to boost spectacle inside the sport. The new point allocation will have the following format: race winner will get 12 points, runner-up will get 9 and 3rd place will have to settle for 7 points; the rest of the field will be awarded 5-4-3-2-1 points respectively.
In addition, the aforementioned body has also announced that the qualifying system will feature a major revamp starting the 2010 season, with further ideas & talks on the subject to make the FOTA agenda in the months to come.
Nevertheless, according to a spokesman from the FIA, the FOTA did not submit their proposals for the 2009 to the international body. FIA's World Motor Sport Council is scheduled to meet on March 17th, this being the last chance of the revised point system to be ratified by the FIA ahead of the Australian Grand Prix.
“If the points system is to be changed for this season, the Council must approve it on this day. Up to now, the teams have not placed a request,” said Richard Woods, according to German publication Auto Motor und Sport.
