Ford Student Auto Skills Award Goes to North Dakota

The 2010 winners of the Ford/AAA Student Auto Skills National Finals have been announced this week, with the award for the "best of the best" going to Jonathan Anderson, 18, and McKenzie Nordland, 17, from Sheyenne Valley Area Career & Technology Center in Valley City, N.D.

Team representing all of the US' 50 states had to diagnose and properly repair "bugs" planted on purpose by mechanics, so that they could drive the car through the finish line. Once passed the line, a jury looked at how the teams managed to overcome the problems.

According to Ford, the team from North Dakota was the only one to have scored a "perfect car" rating, without "any demerits for poor workmanship". The team managed to complete all the challenges in 61 minutes and 30 seconds.

"Technology advances in today's automobiles demands that our country is stocked with the next generation of auto professionals that are as technically savvy as they are mechanically inclined. We saw 100 of the very best and brightest automotive technicians on display today," said John Nielsen, AAA National Director of Auto Repair and Buying Services.

The winners of this year's event will be taken to the backstage of the O'Reilly Raceway Park in Indianapolis, where they will witness the No. 16 Roush Fenway Racing Con-way Freight race team at work.

In addition to this backstage pass, Ford offered this year a record $11.5 million in scholarships to the 10,500 juniors and seniors taking part in the competition. Last year, the amount of money made available by Ford stood at $10.7 million.
