Ford Focus ECOnetic Revealed

Next week, during the Amsterdam Motor Show, Ford will present to the world the ECOnetic version of the new Focus. A model which, the Americans say, will “establish a new industry benchmark for fuel efficiency in the popular compact class.”

In an attempt to build up the consumer interest for next week's event, on Wednesday Ford released the full details of the new model. A model which was built with only one thing in mind: consume as little fuel as possible.

Powered by a 1.6l Duratorq TDCi diesel engine, the ECOnetic comes with the promise of a fuel consumption that would fit perfectly with any other hybrid: 3.5l of diesel per 100 kilometers (or about 80 mpg).

The achievement was made possible by Ford's stubbornness to pack into the model all the fuel-saving technologies at its disposal. Neatly wrapped in the ECOnetic coat, technologies like Auto-Start-Stop, Smart Regenerative Charging, Ford Eco Mode, 6-speed Durashift manual transmission and Shift Indicator Light help bring the fuel consumption rating to that amazing low.

As if that wasn't enough, Ford also created a special set of modifications for the body of the Focus, meant to cut drag and, again, increase efficiency: additional undershields and deflectors (cover most of the underfloor between the front and the rear axle), steel wheels combined with special low-drag ECOnetic wheel covers and Active Grille Shutter.

The ECOnetic version of the new Focus will hit the market in 2012, and will be offered in both five-door or wagon version. For the European market, the model will be produced in Saarlouis, Germany. Prices are not yet available.
