Ford Confirms Hirvonen, Latvala for 2011

Ford's team principal Malcolm Wilson today confirmed that no matter the final result of the negotiations with current Citroen Junior Team driver Sebastien Ogier, current rally drivers Mikko Hirvonen and Jari-Matti Latvala will continue to drive for the works team in 2011.

Although both have had a season to forget so far – Hirvonen is currently 3rd overall, while Latvala sits in 4th place, both being way behind championship leader Sebastien Loeb in points scored – Ford seems to appreciate their efforts in 2010. However, the recent reports suggesting Ford is trying to get Ogier aboard for the next year campaign have cast a shadow of doubt over their future in Ford's works team.

Talking about his 2011 plans, Wilson made it very clear that neither of the two Finns will leave the organization, nor will they be demoted to satellite Stobart M-Sport. Nevertheless, the Ogier situation remains to be resolved, as Ford is considering a 3-driver programme for the 2011 season of the WRC.

There's no secret, both of our drivers (Latvala and Hirvonen) are confirmed for next year and they will continue. A lot of the other stuff I'm working on, I consider as private until we get it in place. The idea is that we would find a solution to run those three guys (Hirvonen, Latvala and Ogier). First and foremost, Jari-Matti and Mikko are in that team for next year,” said Wilson.

According to Wilson, the 2011 title is much more important than the one this season, as next year Ford will debut the brand new Fiesta model for the series.

Next year is very important to us to win the manufacturers' championship with the brand new car - we did it when the Focus was brand new (in 2006) and we want the same with the Fiesta. We're looking at the best possible way to get the best chance and that's one of the reasons we have gone for Ogier - to strengthen the team,” added Wilson.
