Imagine waking up on Christmas morning and finding a pickup truck like this one here under the tree. We know you’d have needed a pretty big tree for that to happen, but go with us.
Given how the passion for pickup trucks never seems to go away, it is understandable how someone placed a bid of $17,750 on Christmas Eve for this International Harvester and turned it into the ultimate gift to wrap up 2020.
Part of the L Series of trucks introduced by International Harvester in 1949, the L-122 example we have here might be worth a bit more than the sum paid for it. The subject of a refurbishment no more than three years ago, it now looks probably better than it ever did.
As usual in such cases, what could be saved was saved and put back into the truck, but also some other, new parts made their way into the build. Those included chrome Chevrolet bumpers, LED taillights, or replacement bucket seats with fold-down armrests and power adjustments for the driver.
Under the hood, the truck retains the original 240-ci (3.9-liter) Silver Diamond inline-six, the mid-range offering at the time in the International lineup. It too has been rebuilt, and is linked to a three-speed automatic transmission sending the power to the rear wheels.
The truck rides on 16-inch wheels behind which sit an independent suspension at the front and a leaf-sprung axle sourced from a Ford Crown Victoria at the rear.
The interior is much more modern than it used to be, sporting the said bucket seats, but also a leather-wrapped steering wheel and an Alpine head unit, among other things. The odometer fitted in the dashboard reads 26,000 miles (41,800 km), but the true mileage is, of course, not known.
Sadly for the rest of us, this pickup truck got away, but there are countless others out there worth a look. Make sure to check out the Celebration Month coverage here on autoevolution this week for more such goodies.
