The fastest Ford present on the European roads, the Focus RS will enter UK's MPG Marathon, aiming to achieve a 35 mpg average (8l/100 km) on the 360 miles-long route (580 km). This will be quite a challenge for the 2.5l 305 PS RS.
"I'm setting out to prove you can use an efficient high-performance car in daily driving without enormous fuel bills," said Jeremy, the one who entered the RS in the 160+ g/km of CO2 class. The car will be driven by Jeremy Walton and co-driver Alyson Marlow, in an attempt to beat the 30.1 mpg combined fuel economy (9.38l/100 km) the regular RS achieves on the road.
"We launched the latest Ford Focus RS not only as the ultimate front-wheel drive performance car but also as a car you can live with every day, and wish Jeremy and Alyson a smooth and safe journey as they prove this out," David Calder, Ford's medium car product manager added.
As you know by now, the RS is not exactly a benchmark in fuel efficiency. It was not even designed to be. It's 2.5l turbocharged engine allows for naught to sixty acceleration in 5.9 seconds and reaches a top speed of 163.4 mph (263 km/h). Figures you can't quite reach today with a tree-lovin' engine.
But, as the British organizers say, the MPG Marathon is for all cars, regardless of what they hide underneath the thin sheet of metal called hood. The Marathon will start on September 30 and will be comprised of two loops, each starting and ending at Brandon Hall Hotel, near Coventry.
"Events like this are great in demonstrating how easy it is to reduce fuel consumption, costs and emissions by making a few simple changes to your driving style. Everybody could reduce their emissions and fuel costs by taking on board the driving tips on the Act On CO2 website and taking a smarter driving lesson," Transport Minister Sadiq Khan says on the Marathon's official website.
