Still on sale in some European countries, the tiny Seicento model manufactured by the Italians from Fiat is getting ready to make a comeback, one which will put it right into the low-cost segment of the automotive market.
The car, not exactly what one would call a hit in terms of looks and market success, will be reborn as a Toyota iQ-sized vehicle which will target low-cost city consumers. According to Autocar, the rebirth of the Seicento marks the demise of the still rumored Topolino.
The Topolino, a car which has been launched as a contender on the upmarket urban cars segment, has apparently been deemed not right for the current economic conditions by the Italian management. For the moment, that is.
The future Seicento will likely be powered by small engines, somewhere in the vicinity of the TwinAir two-cylinder engine present on the 500. Fiat has already announced several versions of the first two-cylinder engine to make it into a production car, versions which will be fitted on several new models.
Being so low cost, the car will have to tackle fuel prices as well, and the single way to do that is to make the engines eat as little fuel as possible. TwinAir, on the Fiat 500, consumes 4.1l/100 km (57.4 mpg) and emits 95g/km of CO2.
Being a 0.9l turbocharged two-cylinder gasoline unit, the engine spits out 85 hp, managing to pull the tiny 500 from a standstill to 62 mph in 11 seconds.
More information on the Seicento will likely become available in the months to come.
