Fiat will finally take advantage of the huge marketing opportunity created by the 500 and its retro chic by launching a new five-door variant at the Geneva Motor Show. We’ve heard it being called everything from MPV, to crossover and wagon, but one thing is for certain, it will be built in Serbia and it will also hit North American dealerships in 2013.
Customers should appreciate a vehicle that allows them to downsize while also offering some of the practicality which the 500 loses. There are many mysteries surrounding this vehicle, but perhaps the biggest one is the name.
Until know, we’ve been forced to use the expression “a car known internally as the Project L-Zero or Ellezero”, but not any more. According to Automotive News, the official name of the vehicle debuting in Geneva is the Fiat 500L.
It’s supposed to be 60 mm or 2.5 inches longer than the three-door, but also taller and wider. It will replace the Fiat Idea, so it’s going to be a sort of compact MPV to rival the Opel Mariva and Ford’s tardy B-Max.
The 500L will officially go on sale in July on the European market, and as previously stated in 2013 in the US market. Design wise, it will borrow its cues from the 500, not from the Panda which is donating its platform.
