FIA Confirm New Entries, Cosworth Makes F1 Return

Following the FIA statement earlier today, it has now become official that Cosworth will return to Formula One as engine supplier after 3 years of absence. Having last produced F1 engines for Williams back in 2006, the British engine manufacturer will provide low-cost power trains for 3 new F1 entries: Campos Grand Prix, Manor Grand Prix and Team USF1.

“Cosworth is proud not only to be able to provide a solution that will deliver the performance needed by these teams to compete in this most technologically challenging sport, but also to extend its long association with Formula 1 as a truly independent provider of competitive motive power,” admitted Cosworth CEO Tim Routsis in a press release.

“Today our engineering capabilities extend beyond racing, encompassing high-technology applications in the aerospace, defense, energy, marine and automotive industries. Cosworth has the necessary infrastructure to fulfill the supply of Formula 1 engines without affecting our other activities,” added Routsis.

Speaking about new faces, the FIA also released the names of Formula One's newest entries. Apart from Team USF1 – who were favorites to take one of the 3 available spots for the 2010 entry list from the very – Manor and Campos Grand Prix will now join the 10 existing teams (hopefully the number will stay the same after June 19th) in the 2010 roster.

Information about the new entries are as presented in a FIA press release:

Team USF1 is led by Formula One veterans Peter Windsor and Ken Anderson and will be based in Charlotte, North Carolina (USA) They will use Cosworth engines and build their own car. Campos Grand Prix is headed by Adrian Campos and will be based in Madrid (Spain), although its technical centre will be at Campos Racing's current headquarters in Valencia. The Spanish outfit will also use Cosworth power plants, while benefiting from Dallare-built cars.

Finally, F1's most surprising entry next year remains Manor Grand Prix, a joint venture between Manor Motorsport and Wirth Research Limited. Team boss will remain John Booth, while joined by Nick Wirth as technical director.

It appears no less than 15 teams lodged 2010 entries on May 29th, including David Richards' Prodrive and Team Lotus. The FIA insisted that “further due diligence is currently taking place on other potential entries.”
