Ferrari, Red Bull Front Wings Legal

Ferrari's incredible weekend in Germany triggered some speculation inside the paddock that some of the parts it used throughout the Hockenheim event might not be as legal as sunshine. To be more accurate, the main focus was on their front wings, which several photographs hinted may be illegal technical wise.

Ferrari were not the only ones being suspected of using illegal wings, as Red Bull's infamous front wing – the one that caused the rift between its two drivers in the British Grand Prix – was also believed to trick the FIA regulations. With everyone examining the front wings of the RB6 very closely, it was shown that its extremities are bending towards the ground.

The same bending approach was used by Ferrari for their F10 challenger, which brought both teams in the spotlight this weekend. However, after examining both concepts closely following the German race on Sunday, FIA technical delegate Jo Bauer issued a statement in which he confirms both designs are legal.

Under the circumstances, it's practically a no brainer that all of Ferrari's and Red Bull's rivals will pick up on this design in the weeks to come. However, with the Hungarian Grand Prix scheduled only days from now, it's likely that they will debut similar front wings only after the summer break, which gives the two teams more room to play this upcoming weekend.

On the pictures I was shown this morning, I - nor our engineers - can explain what ... it looks unusual. (...) If it is (achieved) by some clever and legitimate way, then we need to learn it very quickly,” admitted McLaren's team principal Martin Whitmarsh prior to the German GP on Sunday.
