Ferrari Confirm Schumacher Non-Key Role

Ferrari's CEO Luca di Montezemolo insisted former 7-time F1 champion Michael Schumacher does not have key role within the Scuderia. The Italian, who decided to take care of his team's F1 business himself starting from the very Bahrain GP last weekend, revealed Schumacher was offered a managing role with Ferrari years ago, but turned it down.

Consequently, his role with Ferrari revolves only around giving suggestions and trying to help team principal Stefano Domenicali in any way that he can in terms of proposals and advices. Di Montezemolo confirmed Schumacher did not want to be an important part of the Ferrari team right now, as he has other plans for the future.

However, he will continue to attend several races alongside the Ferrari pit wall, but only to support the team.

He came to a few races last year, he came at the beginning of this season and he will come again. But he does not have a responsible role because he does not have the time to be at Maranello. He gives ideas and proposals as an advisor – no more and no less,” Di Montezemolo was quoted as saying by German news agency SID.

Michael has a good mentality, but I understand that his life is now something else. So I asked him to come to a few races and support us,” added the Italian official.

Schumacher himself admitted, prior to this weekend's race at Sakhir, that he was offered the chance to take on the responsibilities of former team boss Jean Todt at the end of 2007, but decided it was not the time to make that step. In addition, he confirmed he'll decide whether to continue the collaboration with Ferrari – one way or the other – during the course of this summer.

Schumi's deal with Ferrari – whatever that might be – is due to expire at the end of this season. As rumored in the media lately, the German driver was offered the chance to join former colleague Ross Brawn at Brawn GP starting 2010. The German did not comment in any way on the potential move to the Brackley based team.
