Schumacher to Decide Over Ferrari Future This Summer

Michael Schumacher confirmed he will make a final decision about continuing as an on-track advisor for Ferrari from 2010 onwards later this summer. The retired seven-time F1 champion's deal with the Scuderia runs out at the end of this year, as announced by Schumacher's long-time manager Willi Weber earlier this month, but none of the two parties have yet issued any statements concerning a potential extension.

Ever since his driving duties with Ferrari ended in 2006, Schumacher's role within the Maranello-based team was not fully clear. Throughout the last 3 seasons, he helped Ferrari in various ways, from testing F1 cars to having an active role in setting race strategies for the team.

This was, in fact, what led to immense criticism from the Italian media, following Ferrari's poor tire strategy in both Australia and Malaysia this year. While denying Schumacher was responsible for Ferrari's weird strategic choices in the first 2 races, Weber also announced his client will likely part ways with Ferrari at the end of the year. Schu, however, only confirmed he will think about it and come up with a decision mid-way thru the current season.

After the summer we will see what makes sense and what does not,” admitted Schumacher, as reported by German news agency DPA. He also wanted to clear rumors suggesting he is not given enough decisional power within the Scuderia team, insisting a deeper role with Ferrari would have been the wrong path for him following his F1 quit.

I could have taken on the role of Jean Todt, but it was not for me. It would have been the wrong time and, above all, I think Stefano Domenicali is able to perform the job much better than I would have,” added the German ace.
