Supplied by the Aisin World Corporation of America, the manual transmission gear position sensor in the Wrangler and Gladiator has been found to be faulty. FCA US LLC has issued two separate recalls over this issue: one for the aforementioned vehicles, and the second for the suspect gear position sensor and – get this – the transmission assemblies.
Alternatively called AGS for all gear sensor, the gear position sensor may have been improperly manufactured by the Japanese corporation's American subsidiary. Toyota is the single largest shareholder of Aisin, holding 22.69% of the shares.

The incorrectly manufactured gear position sensor has two effects on the Wrangler and Gladiator. First and foremost, the rearview camera image won't be displayed on the infotainment system's touchscreen. What's more, the reverse lights don't turn on when shifting into reverse, increasing the risk of a crash.

Both scenarios go against federal motor vehicle safety standards 111 (for rear visibility) and 108 (for lamps, reflective devices, and associated equipment). No fewer than 4,530 examples of the 2022 to 2023 model year Wrangler are recalled, namely vehicles produced between February 7, 2022 and May 6, 2023 at the historic Toledo assembly complex in Ohio.

Said plant dates back to 1910 when John Willys was calling the shots. Two years later, Willys and Overland were fused into the Willys-Overland Motor Company. Through 1918, it was the second-largest automaker in the United States after FoMoCo.

Turning our attention back to the recall, an estimated 1,768 units of the 2022 to 2023 model year Gladiator are affected as well. These vehicles were manufactured in the period starting February 7, 2022 and ending February 21, 2023. Documents filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reveal that FCA US LLC has also recalled 183 gear position sensors and 340 transmission assemblies.

Speaking of which, both the Wrangler and Gladiator feature the Aisin AL6 six-speed manual for longitudinal rear-wheel-drive applications. Wrangler and Gladiator owners will be informed of the supplier's mistake no later than November 7. The mailed notifications include instructions to bring the vehicle in for a replacement gear position sensor.

In the meantime, owners can easily check whether their Wranglers and Gladiators are recalled by running the VIN on the federal watchdog's online portal. The Washington, D.C.-based automotive safety agency doesn't charge a cent for this service.

Refreshed for model year 2024, the Wrangler and Gladiator dropped the 3.0-liter EcoDiesel V6. The Wrangler can be had with the 3.6-liter Pentastar V6, 2.0-liter Hurricane I4, or as a plug-in hybrid. The Gladiator 4xe is nowhere to be seen, leaving only the naturally-aspirated Pentastar as the sole powertrain available for MY24 in the US market.

On the upside, the Gladiator did gain more standard features. The Wrangler, by comparison, boasts a full-float solid rear axle in Rubicon flavor. Not only does the full-float design make it possible to fit larger tires, but the vehicle's weight is transferred to the axle tube instead of the shaft. This, in turn, enables an increase in towing capacity to 5,000 pounds (2,268 kilograms) for the Rubicon with either the 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 engine or 2.0-liter Hurricane I4.
