Dear Porsche fans, we have bad news for you – BMW's ugly split headlight styling is like a virus, and the Stuttgart-based sports car and SUV maker has caught the bug. At least, that's what the rumor mill wants us to believe.
Not long ago, we got the definitive confirmation that Porsche is almost ready to proceed with the official introduction of the second-generation Macan compact luxury crossover SUV. Produced since early 2014, the current generation is a front-engine, AWD five-door CUV with inline-four and V6 ICE power at the helm. But that's about to change – as the second iteration will solely come in EV formats.
We have known that for a while now, and the company has officially confirmed this paradigm change on numerous accounts. However, until very recently, no one knew the looks of the finished product because it was still testing under heavy camouflage. Well, not anymore, as a black unit was caught by our spy photographer partners almost entirely devoid of any design protections.
And unfortunately, while the profile keeps the sporty format and the rear seems like a natural evolution of the previous iteration, the front end adopts the confusing and controversial split-headlight format. It's like a shorter, bulkier Taycan on stilts, and it doesn't do too much good presenting it like that. However, it is what it is – both in the real world as well as across the virtual domains of the imaginative realm of digital car content creators.
Speaking of the latter, the good folks over at Kolesa and their resident pixel master Nikita Chuicko, aka kelsonik on social media, haven't gone soft on this new EV and decided to showcase all the unofficial goodies. It's not easier on our eyes in CGI format, but at least the rear and the profile are even cleaner than their predecessor.
Of course, do take all this with a healthy grain of salt – maybe Porsche wanted us to see the de-camouflaged prototype and draw the wrong conclusions. Hope is slim, of course, since they don't usually spend a lot of cash to do such tricks. As for what will happen in real life, we already know the Macan EV will share a lot of DNA with the upcoming Audi Q6 e-tron, as both will have the same Premium Platform Electric (PPE) architecture underpinnings.
Whereas the Audi Q6 e-tron is said to come with up to 503 horsepower in SQ6 e-tron form, the Porsche Macan EV sibling is rumored to sport additional electric ponies – up to 603 of them, to keep an edge in the sports department. On the other hand, some credentials might be the same – including the 800-volt electric architecture for fast charging times at up to 270-kWh and a battery pack with around 100 kWh, which Audi has already confirmed for its own PPE model.
