If you are a true fan of the Munich based manufacturer, this should come as no surprise. There have already been a lot of rumours going around about the engines that will power the new M3 and M4. This time though there's proof o life for the new M engine, as according to a VIN search, the new M cars will be equipped by a new six-cylinder turbo engine known as the S55.
That's the good news. The bad news is that, even though most of us thought that the new M4 and M3 will have more horsepower, the newly found evidence suggests that the 3.0L inline 6 cylinder engine will produce around 415 HP. That's a 35 HP decrease from the initial roumored number of 450 HP.

Another piece good news is that, according to a source close to the German engineers, the new engine will produce more torque than previously anticipated (around 395 lb-ft or 535 Nm).

What else did the VIN search return? Well, it seems that the new cars will weigh less than the E90 and E92, going for E46 territory. The E90 and E92 weigh 1690 kgs (3,726 pounds) and 1680 kgs (3,704 pounds) respectively, whilst the E46 weighs 1549 kgs (3,415 pounds). That means a 140 kilograms weight reduction, which could be just what we're waiting for in order to make the new versions even more fun. Adding the fact that the engine will produce 535 Nm (395 lb-ft) to the low weight, these new models will be pretty wild.

Of course, when talking about weight, we have to keep in mind that all these numbers represent the car's curb weight (that's just the standard model's weight, without considering all the added options' weight) and so, the final weight of any given F80 M3 or F82 M4, will depend on the way each owner configures his own vehicle. Nevertheless, the new engine has a torque increase of almost 170 Nm over the E46's S54 and 135 Nm over the E90's S65, and combined with the slightest weight reduction, there are pleanty of reasons to look into trading in your old M3.

Technical data isn't the only thing that the VIN information revealed. Many features and options that will be available for the F80 M3 and F82 M4 have been revealed, along with the release dates ( June 2014 for the European Delivery of the M3 and late 2014 for the M4).
