El Solitario is a name which stands for "unusual bikes you first hate and then love". Or bikes you just love at first sight, like the Winning Loser was. The Baula is David Borras' new reintepretation of an old bike, in this case an old BMW R75/5.
Borras admits that the Baula (Spanish for leatherback turtle) was inspired by the 1939 TT-winning BWM and the art deco Henderson. However, the resulting bike is so different from both and has so much character that we can only take David's words for granted.
The suspension and engine have been rebuilt and the frame restored and nickel plated. A huge Hoske tank is probably the first thing to catch the eye, while the Velocette Thruxton fishtail pipes add a dash of steampunk to the whole build.
We simply loved the dual-panel windscreen matching the two-piece headlight. And since everything comes in pairs with the Baula, Borras added dual tail lights on each Buco panniers. Vintage leather grips complement the custom handlebars with retro Royal Enfield levers and a suede seat incorporating the rear cowl adds a finishing touch to the El Solitario Baula.
If you don't like it, it's ok. But you can't pretend you'll soon forget it because... that's the El Solitario effect.
