BorgWarner's eGearDrive transmission, debuted on the Tesla Roadster, has been named one of the finalists for the 2010 Automotive News PACE Awards. Specially aimed at electric vehicles, the transmission has a good chance of becoming the technology of choice for EVs in 2010 and 2011.
"BorgWarner is proving that key technologies enable drivers to enjoy superior performance while being good stewards for the environment," John Sanderson, BorgWarner Drivetrain Systems president said in a release. "We're pleased to be among this year's distinguished PACE finalists once again."
The eGearDrive is a single-speed gearbox which allows EVs to get extended battery range and achieves higher torque capacity with 98 percent efficiency. Being aimed at eco-friendly vehicles, it is made of 99 percent recyclable materials.
Used on the Roadster, it allows the EV to achieve its naught to sixty acceleration time in 3.7 seconds and the top speed of 125 mph. It also contributes to the 250 miles range on a single charge.
Besides being used for front-wheel drive and rear-wheel drive electric and hybrid vehicles, the eGearDrive can also be used to enable launch assist, energy recovery, and AWD performance for the secondary-driven axle on any type of vehicle.
As for the awards, it was nominated for, PACE highlights "superior innovation, technological advancement and business performance among automotive suppliers." So far, BorgWarner managed to win five PACE Awards and three PACE Innovation Partnership Awards in only four years.
