EcoCAR 2 Challenge Goes for Electric Drives

Building on the previous experiences and results achieved with EcoCAR: The NeXt Challenge, the US Department of Energy (DoE) announced during the SAE World Congress the launch of the EcoCAR 2: Plugging into the Future competition.

Over the next three years, sixteen university teams will try their best to envision a brighter future for electric vehicles. Using a 2013 Chevrolet Malibu as a platform, the participating teams will try and come up with better, lighter and more efficient powertrains, all based on electric drive technology.

The challenge announced by the DoE calls for the teams to come up with a solution that will make their car much better than production gasoline vehicles. The participants will have to use for the completion of their tasks electric powertrains, generation control systems, and battery technologies.

The main targets the teams will have to reach are the following: reduce petroleum energy consumption on the basis of a total fuel cycle analysis, reduce fuel consumption, reduce WTW and GHG emissions, reduce criteria tailpipe emissions and at the same time maintain consumer acceptability in the areas of performance, utility, and safety.

The teams that have been selected to enter the competition (and possibly the ones that will come up with historical breakthroughs in electric vehicle drives) are the following:
  • California State University, Los Angeles
  • Colorado State University
  • Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University
  • Mississippi State University
  • North Carolina State University
  • The Ohio State University
  • Pennsylvania State University
  • Purdue University
  • Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology
  • University of Ontario Institute of Technology
  • University of Tennessee, Knoxville
  • University of Victoria
  • University of Washington
  • University of Waterloo
  • Virginia Tech
  • Wayne State University (Detroit, Michigan)
