Eating while Driving Deadlier than Using the Phone

In an effort to make people aware of the dangers of doing, well, anything while driving, apart from driving, the University of Leeds has recently published a study called “Two Hands Better Than One”.

Its aim is to raise awareness towards the dangers of eating, talking on the phone and even drinking while driving (though we think that by now we do get the ‘no drinking and driving’ thing pretty well - more so than in the past).

With the aid of a simulator, they discovered that reaction times increased by 22% while drinking from a can of soda or a coffee and by as much as 44% when eating and driving. A 37% increase in the reaction time was also noted for drivers texting while at the wheel and, surprisingly, an 0.08 blood alcohol level only increased reaction times by 12.5%!
