E-Car TM, Another City, Plain EV

Despite the fact that EVs are the most likely "cars of the future", we can't help but to be amazed of the carbon-copy, battery-powered vehicles avalanche, announced by manufacturers worldwide.

The latest is Electric Car Company. The Missouri based manufacturer announced yesterday it will begin production of the E-Car TM, a previously unannounced battery powered vehicle, which will be put on sale on September 15.

The E-Car uses a few innovative technological advancements, like the fluids-, lines-, pumps-free electric power steering, or the compact, electric powered heat/AC system. Batteries offered for the E-Car range from standard Lead to Lithium...

So, what's the problem? Well, the problem is, actually, two, one of a subjective nature and one of an objective one. The objective one is the price: $14,995, fully optioned. For that you get "a plush, comfortable interior", "safety features not yet available on many low speed or medium speed electric vehicles" and many other, yet unspecified features...

A bit expensive, one might say, given the available hybrids out there which, despite not being all-electric, spare you the "Oh, my god, nowhere to plug my car!" panic attacks.

The second problem, the subjective one, concerns the design of the car. What Ron LaPlant, Electric Car Company CEO calls "the most stylish and comfortable electric car on the market" looks, in fact, as plain as any given Chinese-built vehicle (truth be told, the first E-Cars will be built in, you guessed it, China). And as plain, dull and zero-personality as any given, city purpose-build electric vehicle...

"We believe it is a step above all other electric cars in it's class" LaPlant said. "It is the best value of all electric cars on the market today." Undoubtedly, it is. And there only one lesson to be learned here: affordable electric is boring. Useful, yet boring.
