United SportsCar Racing, the new series resulted from the merger of Grand-Am and the ALMS (American Le Mans Series) has announced plans to hold a US based competition for DTM (German Touring Car Masters) racecars.
The news was revealed during a United SportsCar Racing press conference held in New York, where the governing bodies of NASCAR and Grand-Am have agreed to host DTM events in the USA by 2016.
The announcement triggered a great wave of enthusiasm at Audi's headquarters, with German company representatives being overjoyed by the opportunity of racing their vehicles over the Pond again.
"Audi has a strong and spectacular history in US motorsport. We are currently looking for options that will allow the four rings to be more visible again on the race tracks throughout the USA. It’s fantastic news that there could soon be a US DTM. The Audi RS models are very popular in America. I’m convinced that our customers will be delighted to see the Audi RS 5 DTM in action," said Scot Keogh, President of Audi of America.
During the late 1980s, the German company has won several prestigious US events, such as the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb (three times in a row), the Trans-Am Series (1989), while dominating the IMSA GTO series in 1989 as well. Moreover, Audi clinched nine American Le Mans Series championship titles in succession between 2000 and 2008.
