Drivers Unwillingly Break the Speed Limit

How many times have you found yourself traveling much faster than the posted speed limit on a certain portion of a road? Quite a few times, right? Now try and remember how many times you broke the speed limit on purpose and how many times it kinda just happened.

A new study, conducted by the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) over the last two months has shown that the speed limits are very often broken. About 90 percent of the 3,000 people who answered an online pole admitted to have traveled faster than the law permitted on some portions of the roads.

Yet, about 60 percent of those people say that, most times, they are well over the speed limit because they get there unintentionally. According to Neil Greig, IAM director of policy and research, most people find it very difficult to comply with the speed limits, for a number of reasons. The most obvious reason is, however, perception.

''There is a discrepancy between drivers' perception of the correct speed and the posted limits imposed by authorities,” Greig told The Telegraph.

''Further training helps improve driver perception and teaches motorists about appropriate speeds but the Government should also ensure the current review of speed limits results in roads visually fitting their limit.”

Other reasons cited by the motorist for breaking the speed limits are the fact that they disagree with some of the limits on some roads, congestion (which makes them be in a hurry when they reach an open portion of the road) and temptation.
