While everybody may remember Alec Issigonis as the face behind the classic Mini of the 1960s, a large part of the credit for the development behind the car should also go to Dr. Alex Moulton, who designed the car’s clever rubber cone suspension system.
Now, the legendary Mini engineer has died, at the age of 92. Moulton, a good friend of Issigonis’ is credited with the creation of the clever rubber cone suspension system, which was extremely compact and lightweight, and it was also a key part in the Mini’s familiar go-kart-like handling everybody knows and loves.

He also conjured up the Hydrolastic system, which connected the two wheels on either side, thus allowing the Mini to glide over bumps more smoothly, giving it a much better ride than anybody would have though possible, for a car with such a small wheel base and tiny wheels.

However, Moulton was most renowned for the invention of the small-wheeled bicycle, which is still popular today, and you can still buy one brand-new - this stands testament to the brilliance behind this, and all of his ‘creations’.
