One major aspect of living the American automotive lifestyle is the eternal struggle between the Big Detroit Three – or, in this case, between a couple of their representatives. On this occasion, the Blue Oval company was left out of the picture, possibly because its S650 Ford Mustang is soon going to keep the banner up for ICE-powered vehicles alone, as the Chevy Camaro and Dodge Charger plus Challenger are heading into semi-retirement.
But no worries, there's plenty of action for Mopar and GM fans to go around. So, the videographer behind the Wheels channel on YouTube is a big fan of MRP, Bandimere, and The Strip – he indiscriminately gives us samples of Mopars versus Corvettes from everywhere. However, there's also one particular race that we need to focus on first.
As seen in the first video embedded below, the skirmish occurred at Bandimere Speedway – also known in the NHRA as Thunder Mountain, which is a quarter-mile dragstrip located just outside Morrison and Lakewood, Colorado. It has been around since 1958 and is the preferred location of the NHRA Dodge//SRT Mile-High Nationals.
If the name doesn't ring any bells, then you ought to know that the quarter-mile dragstrip is also famous for its extremely high elevation, which means naturally aspirated cars tend to suffer badly when deprived of their precious oxygen concentration. The protagonists, on the other hand, seemed oblivious to the facts.
So, in the left lane sits a customized Chevy Corvette Z06 of the C7 variety, complete with visions of lightning bolts and a lovely rear wing. Its opponent, meanwhile, is a Dodge Challenger R/T dressed in purple with classic white stripes on the side. Well, those didn't do it any good when it was time to show its mettle – the Z06 driver took no prisoners and snatched the lead early on with a great 0.047 response time.
Ultimately, the Challenger ate its dust despite an equally swift response time of 0.296s! So, the victory was rightfully earned by the Z06 with an 11.49s ET and 119 mph (192 kph) trap speed against its opponent's 15.18s pass. No worries, though, as the second video embedded below is a compilation of Corvettes going against Mopars, and there are plenty of chances to redeem the quarter-mile dragstrip debt!
