Distracted Driving Overrated, Say Young Drivers

A new proof that Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood's epidemic speech on distracted driving is not pure rhetoric comes this week via Consumer Reports, who conducted a poll on the subject on young drivers under 30 years old.

According to the results of the poll, young drivers don't see distracted driving as a problem, but rather as a natural consequence of the age they live in. 63 percent of those responding to the poll admitted to have used a handheld device while driving in the past 30 days, while 30 percent of them said yes when asked if they had texted and drove in the same period.

The results in themselves, worrying as they are, do not come as a surprise. What comes as a surprise is the fact that the people engaging in this type of activities see no dangers in using their hands and eyes for something other than driving. Only 30 percent of those questioned (1026 respondents) were very concerned about the problem.

“Distracted driving has become a deadly epidemic on America’s roads, and teens are especially vulnerable because of their inexperience behind the wheel and, often, peer pressure,”
Secretary LaHood said according to enewspf.com.

“Behind the statistics are real families who have been devastated by these tragedies. We’re pleased to be working with Consumer Reports to raise awareness and help communities fight this problem.”

Meanwhile, the government is intensifying the efforts it makes to transform what was once a trend into a crime, including through programs like the Faces of Distracted Driving online awarness campaign.
