Dalai Lama Loses Nephew on Walk for Tibet

A sad day today for one of the world's iconic figures, the Dalai Lama. Jigme Norbu, one of his nephews, was killed on February 15 in Florida, after being hit by an SUV driven by 31-year-old Keith O'Dell.

According to The Associated Press, citing the Highway Patrol's report, Norbu was marching on the white line in the same direction as traffic on state highway A1A. The 45-year old, an active militant for the recognition of Tibet, was taking part in the Walk for Tibet event which he started on Valentine's Day together with other Tibetan rights fighters.

Apparently, Norbu sent his companions by car to a nearby restaurant as it got dark and decided to walk an additional two miles on his own.

The walk, meant as a means for the local Tibetan rights group Ambassadors For World Peace to bring awareness to the cause and celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Tibetan rebellion against China, was supposed to cover 300 miles from St. Augustine south to West Palm Beach.

His journey ended abruptly 25 miles south of St. Augustine when he was struck by the SUV. According to the police, the driver of the SUV, who was driving accompanied by his son, was not charged.

“Such a loss for so many people who knew and loved him personally, as well as for the larger cause to which he was gearing up to give more of his time and effort. Living epically comes at a price. Sorry it was so soon for Jigme, who was just coming into his prime,“
says a post on the Ambassadors For World Peace official website.
