Mainly to restructure their lithium-ion battery activities, Daimler AG just bought all the shares of the Deutsche ACCUmotive GmbH & Co. KG and Li-Tec Battery GmbH companies, which were previously co-owned by the Stuttgart car manufacturer and Evonik.
All the shares held by Evonik in Li-Tech Battery GmbH (50.1 percent) and Deutsche ACCUmotive GmbH & Co. KG (10 percent) have now been transferred under the Daimler umbrella for an undisclosed amount of money.

“Along the value chain for drive-system batteries with lithium-ion technology, we now have the two most important components: the production of battery cells and the related development and production of highly complex drive-system batteries as a combination of cells and battery electronics. In this way, we secure not only expertise in electric mobility, but also the sites in Kamenz and Kirchheim/Teck.” said Harald Kröger, Head of Development at Mercedes-Benz Cars Electrics/Electronics.

Based in Kamenz, near Dresden, the Li-Tec Battery GmbH is a manufacturer and distributor of large lithium-ion battery cells, with some of them even being used in the current smart fortwo electric drive (pictured).

As some of you know, the tiny electric two-seater is the market leader in Germany when it comes to newly-registered electric cars, having a market share of around 30 percent.

While this piece of information might get overlooked as just another buyout, it does gives us a glimpse at Daimler's future plans when it comes to electric mobility, especially since we're only weeks away from the launch of the Mercedes-Benz B-Class Electric Drive.
