Coulthard Positive About Jenson/McLaren Deal

Although advising Jenson Button not to switch to McLaren prior to the upcoming season, Scottish driver David Coulthard yesterday had a change of heart and granted his fellow countryman with enough chances to thrive alongside McLaren's protege Lewis Hamilton.

Several voices within the F1 paddock – including F1 pundits – argued against Button's move from Brackley to Woking, emphasizing the importance of team support during the 2010 Formula One Championship. Starting with Sir Jackie Stewart and ending with Niki Lauda – both triple champions of Formula 1 – all argued that McLaren's loyalty towards Ham would block Button's efforts to defend his F1 crown.

DC somehow distanced himself from all those allegations, insisting that there would be no reson for Button not to show his true skills at McLaren. Writing his column in the Daily Telegraph, the Scottish driver insisted that neither Ham nor Button would put their reputation on the line just to gain the No 1 status within the Woking team.

It's as if Lewis Hamilton's victory in 2008 was somehow more worthy. (...) This is an opportunity to see the last two world champions putting their reputations on the line on an equal footing,” said DC in the aforementioned publication.

Talking to the media for the first time since his confirmation at McLaren, Button was also quite frank about the whole thing, insisting that this will be a great opportunity for him to measure forces with a fellow world champion.

Would I fancy my chances against him (Hamilton)? Well, every driver would, every driver wants to show to themselves, more than anyone else, how good they are,” said the 29-year old Brit.
