Supplier Continental announced today it will be hiring 100 people for its manufacturing facility in Fletcher, to meet the production demands for brake calipers. Continental plans to fill job openings in assembly, engineering or supervisory positions.
The new jobs are needed following the $30 million expansion of the Fletcher facility announced by Continental last summer. In all, over the next few years, Continental will be hiring 325 people.
Most will be used to fill positions on the new production line which was added to handle the manufacturing of combination calipers (a mix of a caliper and a parking brake). The components are said to reduce the weight of the vehicle and consequently improve gas mileage.
"When we hire people, we look for them to be with Continental for a long time; the average length of employment is about 10 years," plant manager Bobby Nelon said in a statement when announcing the decision.
"I am very pleased that we have the chance to offer such stable employment to the people of the western North Carolina area."
Continental is one of the biggest suppliers of brake systems, systems and components for powertrains and chassis, instrumentation and infotainment solutions, even if it is largely known as a premiere manufacturer of tires.
The company currently employs some 134,500 workers in facilities spread throughout 46 countries.
