Confirmed: GM Closes Saab, Leaves Little Room for Hope

General Motors recently confirmed that it will start winding down Saab and revealed the name of the company that will supervise the entire process. AlixPartners will be in charge of Saab’s closing, a process which, according to GM, is expected to take up to several months.

“GM today confirmed it has selected AlixPartners to supervise the orderly wind down of Saab, and has requested approval of the selection by the appropriate authority in Sweden. The use of a wind down supervisor is a commonly-used process in Sweden and works in the interest of the shareholder,” a statement released by the US-based manufacturer reads.

“The wind down process is expected to take several months, and will ensure that employees, dealers and suppliers are adequately protected. As stated previously, Saab customers can be assured that warranties will continue to be honored and that service and spare parts will continue to be available.”

This basically represents the first confirmation that General Motors is indeed planning to shut down the brand, despite the offers it has received in the last few months. The reason behind this decision is still unknown and uncanny, given the fact that the main interested bidder – and we mean here Spyker – improved its proposal several times to reach an agreement with the US giant.

What’s more important is that GM still left little room for hope as it confirmed that several investors expressed their interest for Saab and, even if the winding down process is due to start very soon, it is still considering their offers.

“GM also confirmed that it has received several proposals for Saab and is continuing to evaluate these proposals. This evaluation is not affected by the appointment of AlixPartners.”

In other words, there is nothing new under the sun… GM is still negotiating with the involved bidders but, at the same time, tries to put pressure on them with Saab’s winding down process…
