After Ford announced only recently it's calling back approximately 205,000 crossovers due to premature rusting, Chrysler just beat that with two fell swoops. One of them affects a lot of Ram pickup trucks, while the second covers over 180k Dodge and Jeep SUVs.
Starting with the bigger bad of the lot, the Chrysler Group tells that 381,876 Ram trucks are recalled on a global scale. These faulty pickups come in the form of the 2010 - 2014 model year Ram 2500 and 3500 models, as well as 4500 and 5500 chassis cabs.
314,704 of them are believed to reside the United States, while 59,432 units are in Canada. So what is the problem with these Ram workhorses? Apparently, an investigation of two cases found that fuel-heater housings can easily overheat.
Restricted to trucks equipped with 6.7L Cummins turbo diesel engines, it appears that a terminal connector near the fuel heater may be subject to friction-induced corrosion. The Chrysler Group highlights it's unaware of any toasty incidents.
Needless to say, dealers are instructed to upgrade certain wiring-harness terminals and replace their fuel-heater housings if they show signs of leakage. Affected owners with questions regarding servicing and anything else reach the Chrysler Group’s Customer Information Center at 1-800-853-1403.
On this occasion, a particular debris cover that protects a certain circuit board can be disrupted by a communication line, thus disabling the electronic stability control (ESC). Unaware of any crashes or related injuries, the automaker is informing that dealerships are to perform a software upgrade at no cost to owners to restore proper communication and ensure the ESC function is working properly.
