Chrysler, Fiat Set Up Engineering Degree

The alliance between American manufacturer Chrysler and the Italians from Fiat is slowly expanding outside the core business that tied them together in 2009. The partners announced today that they plan to tap into the pool of young talents studying at the Politecnico di Torino in Italy and at the University of Windsor by setting up a joint international degree in automotive engineering.

The program will allow those graduates who are worthy enough, from both universities, to spend two-years working for one of the two car makers. For those in Windsor, in the first year the program will allow them access to vehicle, virtual simulation, powertrain engineering and manufacturing process management, while in the second year, to be spent in Turin, they will work on a thesis on a research and development project determined by Fiat.

The Italian students will follow the same program, but in Italy at first and then in Windsor. Once they have completed the program, the students will receive both a Masters of Engineering degree from the University of Windsor and a Laurea Magistrale degree from Politecnico Di Torino.

"The initiative we are celebrating today was conceived through a singular and rather fortunate crossing of paths: the relationships developed over the years between Fiat and Politecnico di Torino and between Chrysler and the University of Windsor,” said Sergio Marchionne, Chrysler CEO.

“Until now, each one of our organizations has followed a separate path but those paths had the same starting point, which was the understanding that – in a world of rapid and continual change – we have an obligation to give our young people both the technical and cultural tools necessary for their education."
