Chrysler Closes St. Louis Plant. Again

Nearly two weeks after American manufacturer Chrysler announced it will reopen the St. Louis North Assembly plant, the company has revised its decision and now says it will idle the facility on July 20, "contingent upon volumes" as Chrysler says.

The plant will open, as scheduled, on June 29 and then close again before the regular summer shutdown, on July 10. The manufacturer says it will work with the UAW to "address the manpower implications in a socially responsible manner," according to Autonews.

The plant was initially scheduled to close in the third quarter, together with plants in Michigan, Ohio and Wisconsin. As the company said back in May, "RamBox production will be moved from this facility to Warren Truck assembly plant during the third quarter of 2009." The 1,200 employees working in St. Louis will be offered incentives to leave, as well as the opportunities to transfer to other Chrysler plants.

All of Chrysler's facilities will be shut down in the weeks of July 13 and July 20, as part of its summer shutdown schedule. The plants will then be retooled to accommodate production of the 2010 model year vehicles.

"All Chrysler Group plants will be closed during a previously announced two-week Summer Break the weeks of July 13 and 20. Re-start of production at other Chrysler Group assembly plants will be announced at a later date," the company said in a release.

As we said, a couple of weeks ago Chrysler announced it will reopen 7 plants in the week of June 29. The seven are Sterling Heights Assembly, Warren Truck Assembly, Brampton Assembly, Windsor Assembly, Toluca Assembly and St. Louis Assembly.
