Chinese Carmakers Displayed Qi in Shanghai, Qi Just Found Out

Most likely guided by the “better late than never” expression, the guys at Wireless Power Consortium (WPC) announced only today the fact that their universal wireless charging standard Qi was demoed at the 2011 Shanghai Auto Show, which took place more than one month ago. Moreover, to look further ridiculous, they also brag that it marked a key milestone for universal wireless charging technology.

"Integrating Qi into automobiles makes charging devices easy for consumers and eliminates cord clutter for drivers. We are delighted to see the automotive industry demonstrating Qi," said WPC Chairman Menno Treffers, "This is further evidence that manufacturers and consumers are demanding a universal standard for wireless charging."

The standard enables interoperability between any Qi-enabled device and any Qi charger, regardless of brand or manufacturer.

With embedded Qi charging technology was provided by Leggett & Platt, and the help of both Philips Qi phones and an Apple iPhone 3 enabled by an Energizer Inductive Charging Sleeve, manufacturers demonstrated wireless charging at the event.

The vehicles that featured the chargers included the Geely EC-8, Chery Riich G6, Changan CX30 and Dongfeng's electric concept cars. Charging stations were seen in center consoles, armrests and on the dashboards of the cars on display. Each charging station could be used to charge one device.

“The wireless chargers were seamlessly blended into each car's interior, complementing the overall aesthetic design. The automakers also used a variety of materials beneath the charging surface including cloth, artificial leather and plastics,”
today’s statement from WPC reads.

Well, what can we say? Sounds great, but we wish we knew that back in April... Let’s hope WPC lets us know in due time what will be the next major auto show to feature its Qi wireless chargers.
